A program aimed at supporting vulnerable individuals in Whitehorse has received national recognition for its harm reduction efforts.

The Council of Yukon First Nations’ Moccasin Mobile Outreach program was awarded the Harm Reduction Award at the 50th Anniversary National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program Summit.

The award acknowledges the program’s dedication to providing essential services, including warm clothing, meals, and cultural support, to those in need. According to a media release, since its launch in February 2024, the MMO has recorded over 22,000 community interactions, highlighting the ongoing need for support.

The team, comprising 19 Indigenous staff members, connects individuals to vital resources and provides first-aid and mental health support training.

Recognition comes as the program continues to grow, with recent funding to extend its services.

I am incredibly proud of the team behind the Moccasin Mobile Outreach program and the difference they are making every day. Their dedication, professionalism, and care for others are at the heart of this work. This national recognition reflects their commitment to showing up for people with respect and compassion, and to strengthening the well-being of downtown Whitehorse.
